How a Used-Car Loan Works
The lender pays the seller; you pay a down payment and then equal monthly instalments (EMIs). The lender’s interest is recorded on the RC as hypothecation until the loan is closed. EMIs are calculated on a reducing balance, so each payment covers that month’s interest and repays some principal.
- Down payment: lenders usually fund a share of their own valuation of the car, which can be lower than the asking price. A larger down payment lowers the EMI and the total interest.
- Tenure: a longer loan lowers the EMI but increases the interest paid. Lenders often limit tenure on older cars so the loan ends while the car still has value.
- Interest rate: used-car loans usually cost more than new-car loans. Your income, credit score and the car’s age all affect the rate.
- Fees: processing fees, documentation charges and insurance bundled with the loan all add to the cost. The Key Facts Statement must show them.
Worked Example: What Tenure Does to the Cost
| Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total interest | Total repaid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 years | ₹15,601 | ₹81,642 | ₹5,61,642 |
| 4 years | ₹12,290 | ₹1,09,902 | ₹5,89,902 |
| 5 years | ₹10,317 | ₹1,39,024 | ₹6,19,024 |
| Interest rate | Monthly EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 9% | ₹9,964 | ₹1,17,841 |
| 10.5% | ₹10,317 | ₹1,39,024 |
| 12% | ₹10,677 | ₹1,60,640 |
| 14% | ₹11,169 | ₹1,90,126 |
These figures use the standard reducing-balance formula and are for illustration only; they are not loan offers. Try your own numbers on the EMI calculator, which also shows the year-by-year split between principal and interest.
A useful rule of thumb: keep the EMI comfortably below a fifth of your monthly take-home pay, so fuel, insurance and servicing still fit.
What the RBI Requires Lenders to Tell You
The Key Facts Statement (KFS)
For retail loans sanctioned on or after 1 October 2024, banks and NBFCs must give you a Key Facts Statement in a standard format before you sign. It shows the interest rate, all fees and charges, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR, the all-in annual cost) and a repayment schedule. Charges not mentioned in the KFS cannot be levied without your explicit consent. Ask for the KFS from every lender you are considering and compare the APRs.
Prepayment Charges
Under the RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025, lenders cannot charge a prepayment or foreclosure fee on floating-rate loans taken by individuals for non-business purposes, for loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Many car loans are fixed-rate, where the lender may still charge a prepayment fee; any such fee must be disclosed in the sanction letter, loan agreement and KFS. Check which kind you are being offered.
Getting Your Papers Back after the Last EMI
The RBI requires lenders to release original movable and immovable property documents, and remove charges registered with any registry, within 30 days of full repayment, and to compensate the borrower ₹5,000 for each day of delay attributable to the lender. For a car loan, ask the lender to issue the NOC and signed Form 35 promptly, then apply on Parivahan to remove the hypothecation from your RC. If a lender doesn’t resolve a complaint, you can escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman.
Documents Lenders Usually Ask For
| Document | Salaried | Self-employed |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and address proof (e.g. Aadhaar, passport) | Yes | Yes |
| PAN card | Yes | Yes |
| Income proof | Recent salary slips, Form 16 | ITRs for recent years, business proof |
| Bank statements | Recent months | Recent months, often longer |
| Car documents | RC copy, insurance, valuation by the lender | Same |
Requirements vary by lender. If you are a student or have no income proof, a parent or spouse can usually apply as borrower or co-applicant.
Your Credit Score
Lenders check your credit report from bureaus such as CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. You are entitled to one free full credit report a year from each bureau. Check yours before applying: correcting an error first is easier than explaining it later.
