A service history shows how a car was looked after. Authorised-workshop records are easiest to verify, but independent garage bills are fine if they are detailed.

What to look for

  • Regular intervals, roughly every 10,000 km or once a year.
  • Odometer readings that always increase between visits.
  • Major items replaced on time: timing belt where applicable, clutch, brakes, battery and tyres.
  • Any accident repairs, which are worth asking about.

Cross-check the odometer

Compare the reading with the service bills and with wear on the pedals, steering wheel and seats. A big mismatch is a reason to walk away.
