Four Kinds of Family Car
| Type | Examples | Seats | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact SUV | Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon | 5 | City families who want height and clearance | Rear seat is tighter than a sedan’s |
| Mid-size SUV | Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500 | 5–7 | Space plus highway comfort | Wider car; check your gate and parking |
| MUV / people-mover | Toyota Innova, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 7–8 | Large families, airport runs, long trips | Size in narrow lanes; third row access |
| Body-on-frame SUV / 4x4 | Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Thar, Mitsubishi Pajero | 4–7 | Rough roads, farm visits, off-road | Fuel costs; heavier steering and ride in town |
What Bengaluru Asks of a Family Car
- Speed breakers and broken patches: ground clearance and a supple suspension matter more than horsepower.
- Waterlogged underpasses in the monsoon: a higher car helps, but no car should be driven through deep water. Never assume an SUV is safe to wade.
- Tight parking: large SUVs are long and wide; measure your gate and spot first.
- Weekend trips: Mysuru, Coorg and the coast reward a stable, comfortable car with room for luggage.
Do You Really Need Seven Seats?
Third rows are often used a few times a year. If that is you, a five-seat SUV or a sedan with a big boot may be more comfortable the other 360 days, and cheaper to run. If you carry grandparents, children and luggage every week, a people-mover like the Innova is the most comfortable way to do it: its third row is usable by adults on short trips, and getting in and out is easier than in most SUVs.
Checks That Matter More on a Used SUV
- Flood damage: silt or rust under the carpets and seat rails, a musty smell, fogging inside the lamps, corroded connectors. Walk away if you find these.
- Underbody: scrapes are normal on a 4x4; cracked or bent parts and fresh welding are not.
- Suspension and steering: listen for knocks over speed breakers; the car should go straight and the steering should not shake.
- 4x4 system: on a four-wheel-drive car, engage 4WD at low speed on loose ground and make sure it engages and releases cleanly.
- Third-row and boot: fold and unfold every seat; check that belts work in every position.
- Tyres: large SUV tyres are expensive; uneven wear also hints at alignment or suspension issues.

Diesel, Petrol and the Long Run
Many used SUVs and MUVs are diesel, which suits families who drive long distances. Diesel cars cost more to service and some parts, such as injectors and the turbocharger, are expensive to replace, so a full service history is essential. Maruti Suzuki stopped offering diesel engines when BS6 emission rules arrived in April 2020, so diesel versions of its cars are now older ones.
