What a Campus or First Car Needs to Do
Most people who move up from a two-wheeler around here want the same three things: a roof when it rains, room for three or four people now and then, and running costs that don’t eat the monthly budget. That points to a small petrol hatchback, usually with a manual gearbox because it is cheaper to buy and maintain.
| Type | Good examples | Why it suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry hatchback | Maruti Suzuki Alto, Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki WagonR | Lowest price, cheapest insurance and parts, fits any parking spot | Small boot; basic safety kit on older cars |
| Premium hatchback | Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno | More space and comfort, better on Mysore Road and highways | Higher price; check for heavy city wear |
| Older sedan | Honda City, Skoda Rapid, Hyundai Verna | A lot of car for the money, big boot | Repairs cost more as the car ages; diesel versions need care |
Running Costs, Honestly
- Insurance: third-party cover is compulsory; comprehensive cover costs more but protects your own car. Our guide on how car insurance works explains IDV and no-claim bonus.
- Servicing: Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have the widest service networks, which keeps routine maintenance simple and parts easy to find.
- Fuel: small petrol engines are the cheapest to run in stop-start traffic. If you drive very little, petrol makes more sense than diesel.
- Parking: many PGs and older houses around Ullal have no covered parking. A small car is easier to leave on the street and to turn in narrow cross-roads.
Paying for It on a Student or Early-Career Income
A used-car loan is possible on a regular salary; lenders look at income proof, bank statements and your credit history. Students without income usually need a parent or guardian as the borrower or co-applicant. Before you speak to anyone, try a few numbers on the EMI calculator and keep the EMI comfortably below a fifth of take-home pay, so fuel, insurance and servicing still fit.
Put money aside for the first month: insurance in your name, a service, and new wiper blades or tyres if the car needs them. It is the part most first-time buyers forget.
If Your Hometown Is Outside Karnataka
Many people around the university are from other states. If you buy a Karnataka-registered car and later move home, you will need a No Objection Certificate (Form 28) from the Karnataka RTO before re-registering it in your state. If you are bringing a car from your home state to Bengaluru, rules on re-registration and Karnataka road tax apply; check the current position with the RTO, because they have been the subject of court cases. Our RC transfer guide covers the basics.
